    Introduction to Tat village

    The Community tourism village of Tat, in Na Hau commune, Van Yen district, Yen Bai province is about 55km from Yen Bai city. Tat village is located in the core area of Na Hau Nature Reserve with a rich valley of terraced fields. It holds strongly hierarchical terrain and forms beautiful streams, waterfalls, and caves. With a cool climate all year round, beautiful and unspoiled natural landscapes, typical customs, cultural activities, traditional manual labor, and farming methods, Tat village is easily a place to learn about the national culture and explore nature. Na Hau has 428 households with 2,149 people, of which 100% are Mong people, living together.

    Cultural information

    The traditional occupations of the residents of Tat village are very hands-on. The villagers here practice traditional brocade embroidery, winemaking, knitting and blacksmithing. The village has its own art team which puts on cultural performances. These help to showcase the indigenous cultural identity with dances and singing along to traditional musical instruments such as Khen, Drum, Flute, and Khen La. 

    The traditional clothing in the village is something to be admired and can be seen at its best during the festivals. Women's costumes are very colorful and diverse, including skirts, split-breasted bras with bibs on the back, Siamese sheets covering the abdomen, belts, headscarves, and leggings. The dress has a truncated, pleated skirt that spreads across the cross in squares, but the skirt is tubular, when worn, the waist is ruffled outside the waist; The shirt opens at the chest to the left, with buttons, generally, the arms, collar, and hem are embroidered with patterns. Jewellery includes earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets and rings. Men's costumes are similar to those of Nung men: long pants, low crotch, low waist, short shirt with wide neck, and are indigo.

    Visitors can get to Tat village by car or train.

    - By car from Yen Bai city to Hanoi - Lao Cai highway to KM 150, follow the An Thinh - Dai Son route through the fragrant cinnamon forests to reach Ban Tat - Na Hau, also known as Tat village.

    - By train, you can go from Hanoi or Lao Cai to Mau A station. Then you will need to travel by car, taxi or motorbike  along the An Thinh - Dai Son route for about 25km to Tat village.

    Cuisine

    What’s good to eat in Tat village?

    Coming to Tat Village, visitors can enjoy the unique cuisine of the people here, especially vegetables, fruits, and meat. The locals are mainly self-sufficient, use seasonal food and ensure food safety.

    Some special dishes visitors can try here are: Boiled black chicken, Black chicken with ginger soup, steamed black chicken with pumpkin, roasted pork with honey, grilled cardamom chicken, dried pork and fried meat. Visitors will often see meats and vegetables hanging from the kitchen, waiting for the right time to use it as an ingredient for cooking with. Another popular specialty dish here is the sturgeon which is raised in Na Hau.

    Along with other ethnic groups in the area there are unique features saturated with the local people’s national identity, and it shows in the culinary culture of the Mong people. These common dishes include Men men, shoe cake, kitchen hanging meat, rice wine and apple cider.

    Information about accommodation in Tat Village

    The Mong ethnic people have a custom of making houses on stilts since ancient times, today, for the people of Na Hau commune, they still retain the custom and identity of the house. As for the characteristics of the H'mong homes in Na Hau commune, there are 3 compartments, 2 to the left, the middle compartment is not paved with floors but is left empty to look up at the new roof of the house; two spaces on either side are used as bedrooms. The two fruits are placed with production tools and are a place to store their own agricultural products such as corn and rice. For the kitchen, it is separate from the main house, with a wood stove and heating every winter, this is a distinctive feature of the houses of the Mong ethnic group living in Na Hau commune.

    Entertainment in Tat village

    Na Hau Forest Festival takes place on the last day of January and two full days of February every year in Na Hau commune, Van Yen district, Yen Bai province. This is a traditional festival with many meanings about forest protection of the Mong people in Na Hau commune. During the three days of the festival, people are not allowed to go into the forest to cut down trees, not to pick green vegetables and not to dig. Therefore, the atmosphere before the festival is very exciting, the Mong families in the commune prepare vegetables and necessary food for their family to use for three days. Children prepare fresh grass for cattle, young men and women prepare their best clothes to go to the festival. The Na Hau Forest Festival consists of a ceremony and a festival where, on the night before it, the people from near and far villages gather at the Commune People's Committee to attend the launching ceremony. This involves everyone and is to protect the forest and watch musical performances. The next morning, the procession from the Commune People's Committee to the sacred forest of the village will take place. Here, the shaman will perform the ceremony under the old tree. Lunch is a meal with local specialties such as black pork, corn wine, men men thang co, and wild vegetables.

    The festival includes cultural performances, sports exchanges and typical traditional games such as shooting crossbows, spinning, pushing sticks, tug of war, etc. The atmosphere is fun and exciting with the sound of mountains and forests still lasting two days later. The Na Hau forest festival is an opportunity for people to meet and communicate to raise awareness of sustainable forest protection and create community cohesion too, which has become increasingly more important in recent years.

    Best Things to do in Tat village

    If you would like to connect with nature, one of the best things to do in Tat village is to go trekking and explore deep in the primeval forest, where you will be isolated from the outside world. Visitors can also explore the ancient tea forest in Giang Phang, located at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level.

    Additionally, during your visit, why not get involved in one of the experiences offered to tourists to help you see exactly what it is like to live in Tat village.

    Visitors can choose a convenient time to take part in a Cultural Exchange Experience. The cultural program will take place, after dinner, for 1 and a half to 2 hours and will include cultural performances and information about the cultural identity of the Hmong people such as Farming, Cham season, giay cake and spring festival.

    If you really want to know how hard the locals work you can experience working in the field. In the ripe rice seasons (September) or the rainy season (May and June), visitors can experience going to harvest rice or planting rice with the villagers. It's not as easy as the locals make it look!

    For a less strenuous activity, guests can book the Cardamom Picking Experience. Cardamom season ripens in September - October every year, so if you come during Cardamon season, you will be able to go to the cardamom fields to pick them.

    For those visitors who want to try something a little bit different then we can recommend the Experience of Catching Snails - don’t worry they move slowly! Na Hau has specialty that is the Na Hau snails, with small fields where snails grow alongside the rice fields, visitors can experience collecting snails. You will be shown how to process them ready to eat and then enjoy the dishes from Na Hau snails.

    For less active or adventurous visitors or for those who fancy doing something more relaxing there is a fantastic Beeswax Drawing Experience that many of our guests, of all ages, can enjoy.
